Connectivity tips for traveling overseas for the first time.

Having been able to travel overseas over the years, it’s safe to say I have learned some lessons along the way. And if you’re like me, who is always connected to the digital space – whether that’s reading e-mails or texting with friends, you surely wouldn’t want to feel disconnected to the world.

So, I thought I’d share some connectivity tips for traveling overseas, especially if it’s going to be your first time to travel abroad. These are not rocket science and actually might be on the obvious side. But these are lesson learned…

Download the Airline Apps

You have to trust me on this. Aside from making it convenient for you to check-in, there are the most important reasons on why you should download that app:

  • It could allow you to track your baggage, especially on connecting flights.

  • You’ll get real-time notifications for any flight changes, cancellations or delays. And if you have a smartwatch like Apple Watch, the experience is even better. You’ll get notification and you don’t even have to look at your phone. Just look at your watch.

  • Some airline apps offer airport maps to make it easy for you to navigate airports.

Activate Your Mobile Carrier’s Global Plan Options

It is not free. But you’ll be glad when you’re not going to have to pay $300 for texts or calls back home, or if you’re using GPS feature while you’re strolling around your destination. Trust me, I’ve had it happened to me before. Paying $300 on overseas overages sucks. Never again. I’d always call AT&T the night before my flight overseas to let them know my destinations. They have several options for their global plan options. I’d rather be paying $60 than paying $300!

Buy an International Charger Adapter

Different countries have different sizes of plugs and voltages.  You’d want to be able to charge and use your iPhone, iPad, etc.  Don’t forget to buy a travel converter/adapter kit.
