One of the most famous Viennese culinary specialties.

Vienna has a lot to offer, from baroque architecture, imperial palaces, the most beautiful gardens in the world, even the best-tasting tap water on Earth, to soul-stirring orchestral music… all of these sound great! But there’s one thing you shouldn’t miss on your to-do list while you’re in Vienna – to try the Sacher-Torte, a chocolate cake or torte invented by Austrian Franz Sacher in 1832, and is one of the most famous Viennese culinary specialties. The best place to treat yourself to a cup of the finest coffee, and a slice of original Sacher-Torte is at a Sacher Cafe, which is located at Hotel Sacher.

“The basis of the entire confection is a chocolate cake, thinly coated by hand with best-quality apricot jam. The chocolate icing on top of it is the crowning glory. It tastes best with a portion of unsweetened whipped cream.”

When you think about it, it sounds so simple – it’s just a chocolate cake with a thin layer of apricot jam in the middle and another on top. Then coated with a thin layer of chocolate icing. Is it a hype? Maybe. But what makes this special is the method of preparation, the history and the cult brand. What’s even intriguing is that the original recipe of the cake has been kept for almost 200 years. And only Hotel Sacher Vienna has the original recipe.

I have to say it’s probably one of the best chocolate cakes I’ve ever had. It is rich, yet not overwhelming nor heavy. The balance of the ingredients are all in there. It melts in your mouth, and it tastes chocolatey heaven. No, it is not sweet, it’s just perfect… like love at first bite.

It went well with a cup of cappuccino as I enjoyed people-watching.

If you’re ever going to Vienna, you should drop by Hotel Sacher to try a piece of Vienna, Sacher-Torte. Yum.
