The practical side of me would always choose a hotel because of its location. The impractical side of me would go after that hotel even it would be SO costly. I’d say that when it comes to visiting Lake Louise, I am always both on the practical and impractical side of things.

Whenever I visit Lake Louise, I would always stay in Fairmont Château Lake Louise, and here’s the reason why: the location. This 4-star resort offers a panoramic view of Lake Louise and the Victoria Glacier. The lake is literally your backyard – you can see the breathtaking view of Lake Louise with the Victoria Glacier as its backdrop. No driving needed, just head for the backdoor, walk a few steps, and there it is… Lake Louise before your eyes.

The rates are considerably pricey compared to other hotels several miles away. During peak season, rates can be anywhere from $622 CAD/night to $2,125 CAD/night depending on the room type you want. But it is the convenience and the view that you’re paying for.

One important tip if you’re planning on staying at Fairmont Chateau is to book way in advance – we are talking about four to six months in advance. Not only this hotel gets booked pretty quickly as it’s one of the most visited hotels in Canada, but you may find rates that are lower than $600 CAD/night. I know it still sounds pricey, but if it’s your first time to go to Lake Louise, stay there for a night or two at least to experience it all.

Aside from the scenic views, the property has several cafes and restaurants inside – suited from family dining to elegant fine dining. They have shops as well.

The property also has a few dining restaurants on site:

  • The Walliser Stube

  • The Fairview

  • Lago Italian Kitchen

  • Afternoon Tea

They also offer spa services, however, I haven’t tried it. Having a spa would be the last thing in my mind when I can go for scenic strolls or sit by the lake to enjoy my great escape.

There are some outdoor activities they offer, such as horse riding, kayaking, and guided hiking. A tour desk is available for other outdoor activities that may interest you.

The staff, I would say, are very friendly. I think I might have given the bellboy too much of a tip that he made me feel like the most important person in the hotel, ha!

WHAT I LOVED:

  • Stunning mountain and lake views

  • Restaurants, shops and spa in the property

  • Overall luxurious accommodation

  • Super-friendly staff

  • The lake is literally your backyard

WHAT I DISLIKED:

  • Costly rooms and dining

  • They get booked so quickly you have to book about six months in advance

  • It's not anywhere near downtown Banff
