Destination Zaandam: The Wonders of Windmills & Countryside

Zaanse Schans is known for historic, authentic 18th century windmills and wooden houses.

My brother and I, along with our aunts decided to check out Zaandam, a Dutch town about 20 minutes away from Amsterdam. Zaanse Schans, a small village within Zaandam, is known for historic, authentic 18th century windmills and wooden houses. This open air is a must-visit when in Amsterdam.

Aside from windmills, one of my favorite things about this place is their display of wooden Dutch clogs! As someone who is into shoes (and I'm talking about owning 264 pairs so far), seeing these wooden clogs really got me excited! Not that I would like to wear them, but they are not just shoes! They’re art – full of colors and stories to tell.

Be advised that it can get pretty crowded with so many tourists. It’s a very touristy area, but they’re not hiding that at all, and that’s okay. Enjoy learning about the culture anyway!
